A new school year brings fresh opportunities, new friendships and busy schedules. As families prepare for the first day, Tri County Health encourages parents and caregivers to make health and well-being part of their back-to-school plans.
Here are a few simple ways to help students begin the year feeling healthy, confident and ready to learn.
Reestablish a Sleep Routine
Summer often brings later nights and changing schedules. Before school begins, gradually return to consistent bedtimes and wake-up times. A calming evening routine—with less screen time before bed—can make the transition easier.
Start the Day With Good Nutrition
A balanced breakfast can help students stay focused and energized. Offer simple options that include protein, whole grains, fruits or vegetables. Packing a water bottle is also an easy way to encourage hydration throughout the day.
Review Health Records and Medications
Check that your child’s health information, school forms and required immunization records are up to date. If your child takes medication during the school day or has allergies or another health condition, coordinate with the school nurse before classes begin.
Support Emotional Well-Being
It is normal for students to feel excited, nervous or both as school approaches. Invite your child to talk about their feelings and listen without judgment. Visiting the school, practicing the morning routine or discussing what to expect can help reduce uncertainty.
Watch for ongoing changes in sleep, appetite, mood or behavior. If you have concerns, reach out to your child’s healthcare provider or school support team.
Help Prevent the Spread of Illness
Remind children to wash their hands regularly, cover coughs and sneezes, and avoid sharing drinks or eating utensils. When a child is sick, follow the school’s illness policy and allow time for recovery.
Plan for Safe Travel
Whether students walk, bike, ride the bus or travel by car, review basic safety rules together. Make sure children know their route, important phone numbers and which trusted adults they can contact if they need help.
Schedule a Health Checkup
Routine medical, dental, vision and hearing care can identify concerns that may affect a student’s health or learning. If your child is due for an appointment, scheduling early can help avoid the back-to-school rush.
A Healthy Start for Every Student
Preparing for school is about more than purchasing supplies. Healthy routines, preventive care and emotional support give students a strong foundation for success.
